SYMPTOMS
Less than 1% of people infected with JEV, approximately 1 in 250 infections, result in severe illness that is characterised by: High Fever, Headache, Neck Stiffness, Seizures, Disorientation, Coma
The FATALITY RATE of severe illness can be as high as 30%. Of those who survive, 30%-50% suffer permanent intellectual, behavioural, or neurological problems.
TRANSMISSION
Bites from infected Culex mosquitoes transmit JEV to humans.
JEV exists in a transmission cycle between mosquitoes, pigs and/or water birds
JEV is transmitted mainly during the warm season in most temperate areas of Asia. Transmission can occur year-round in the tropics and subtropics, but often intensifies during the rainy season and pre-harvest period in rice-cultivating regions.
